How You Can Help
The first thing you can do is to learn more about the gray wolf. Not only will you be able to be more knowledgeable in talking to others about the "original dog," but you may be fascinated, as I was, in matching wolf behavior with dog behavior. The best place to start after this site is livingwithwolves.org. Jim, Jamie, and Garrick Dutcher have been educating people about the gray wolf for decades. You can learn much there, as well as connect with their Facebook page. Consider making a donation to LWW if you can; they are the premier wolf advocacy organization, in my opinion. You will also find a list of great books about wolves and dogs on this site (selfsamehands.com under Recommended Readings); so please feel free to take full advantage of that to learn more about those subjects.
Then, you may want to visit and perhaps support one of the wolf sanctuaries around the country. I will be providing a list of some of them in the near future. And finally, after you have chosen an organization to support, you can learn about petitions you can sign, and other efforts you can join to protect wolves from irrational persecution, and domestic dogs from abuse.
On this site, anything you purchase will help wolves. I have pledged 40% of all profits on the poster of my poem, "Selfsame Hands" to the Living with Wolves Foundation. I also will give 20% of the profit from the other wolf related merchandise to wolf sanctuaries that I have visited or know of that are doing good work.
Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or comments about any of this. Share a special story with us about your dog, along with photographs, if you wish. Looking forward to a lively discussion about our canine companions and the wolves that were their forerunners. Thanks so much for visiting!
